Conversion of an inner-city large-scale metz-gerei into housing, shops and an underground wholesaler with 24’000m2 gross floor area. The urban design approach is derived from the heterogeneous urban morphology and complements existing open and closed block structures. Even with a high building density, the precisely set volumetry respects the small-scale neighbourhood. Precisely defined ground floor areas and outdoor spaces allow for a new urban boulevard with a new tram stop. A taller building marks the entrance to the city and leaves space for a new public space that is urgently needed in the neighbourhood: a small urban pocket park to the existing neighbourhood bakery.
