From the final report of the indicative concept dated April 19, 2024: The development at the railroad station is a key project for the municipality of Muri. The Muri railroad station currently has an ambivalent appearance. On the one hand, the town is unique and known throughout the country for its hilltop monastery complex, which can be seen from afar. On the other hand, the area between the foot of the monastery complex and the railroad station has a rather dreary existence. The people of Muria see their railroad station as a place that urgently needs to be upgraded. The area between the station site and the Pflegi Park has considerable deficits in terms of both traffic and space. These include the urgent need for a modern and customer-friendly bus station, an unattractive pedestrian underpass in Eggstrasse, Aarauerstrasse, which is very unattractive on foot, and the neglected strip of historic villas and their enclosed gardens.
In 2010, following an investor competition, the municipality entrusted the development of the area to a private development company. However, their design plan proved to be unfeasible. With a new development company and in close cooperation with the municipality, an attempt was made to “cure” this design plan. However, as the public needs could not be satisfactorily resolved on this basis, the municipal council suspended the design plan procedure and took the dossier into its own hands. The go-ahead was given at the municipal assembly on August 20, 2020, where the planning credit was approved without opposition. Compared to the failed old design plan, the focus was to be set as follows from then on:
– Finding the best possible solutions for key public needs (in particular mobility, quality, sustainability)
– Inclusion of all relevant stakeholder groups in the planning process (cooperative planning)
In the meantime, a test planning procedure has been carried out with three teams of planners and, based on this, an indicative concept has been drawn up under the leadership of Salewski Nater Kretz AG. The current indicative concept forms the basis for the development of a binding development plan for the municipality, which will set out the main objectives and cornerstones for further planning (special use plans) and development of the Muri railroad station area (specific infrastructure, construction and utilization projects).
