The Nidwalden Security Competence Centre combines multiple functions on one site. The basic urban disposition is robust enough to accommodate deviations in density and program. Thus, all traffic-intensive uses are located in the east of the site, while the public-oriented functions occupy the west. The dense use of the ground floor is distributed in such a way as to create spaces with a quality of stay, as well as an inviting, representative face for the canton, without impairing the functionality of the individual uses.
The House of the Canton forms the face and the prelude to the area. It is already visible as a sign from the Nidwalden valley floor and marks the arrival of visitors at the roundabout. As a superordinate function of the area, it is connected with the local recreation area at the dam.
