The area between Sonnenweg and Schwarzenburgstrasse adjoins the current town center around the municipal administration to the north. With the Bläuacker site to the south, a spatial and functional connection has been created that enables the center to be extended to the train station. The location and the connection offer great potential for developing the community’s arrival point at the station into an inviting, lively place. The expansion of the bus station can have a supportive effect here, as higher passenger frequencies are generated, but at the same time its spatial impact must be carefully designed in order to achieve the greatest possible compatibility of traffic and life at city level.
The urban design is based on a long-term, unpredictable development in small steps on the existing plots. In the workshop process, the willingness for possible joint developments with the owners was explored and is presented in the target image, partly as variants.
Between Köniz railroad station and Schwarzenburgstrasse, a medium-density urban quarter is being created that is characterized by the strong contrast between the active, lively streets and the quiet, green center. The development largely follows the current plot structure and envisages five-storey buildings that follow the course of the street. The first floors will be used for public spaces facing the street, while the green center and upper floors will be residential. The roofs can be designed as pitched or flat roofs, with eaves facing Schwarzenburgstrasse and gables facing Sonnenweg. As an option, the characteristic building of the file factory and the historic high chimney can remain and remind us of the area’s past with the chipboard factory. The current position cleverly emphasizes the end of the wider street section at the station and draws the eye to the chimney.
